Sheriff Gary Long has proudly served the citizens of Butts County, Georgia, with integrity, dedication, and a steadfast commitment to public safety. First elected in 2012 and taking office in 2013, Sheriff Long has built a reputation as a hands-on leader who prioritizes both strong law enforcement and meaningful community engagement.
With decades of experience in law enforcement, Sheriff Long has worked to modernize the Butts County Sheriff’s Office while maintaining a community-first approach. Under his leadership, the agency has implemented proactive crime prevention strategies, strengthened partnerships with local, state, and federal agencies, and maintained a focus on transparency and accountability.
Sheriff Long is especially known for his commitment to community outreach. He has championed programs such as The Sheriff’s Cause with Santa Claus, Women’s Self-Defense Classes, and Citizens Handgun Safety courses—initiatives designed to educate, empower, and build trust between law enforcement and the community. His leadership has contributed to a safe environment and a strong sense of connection between the Sheriff’s Office and the citizens it serves.
